Box Office: "The Predator" #1 But Unspectacular, "A Simple Favor" Surprises

Getting to #1 at the box office is always a win, but the $24 million that “The Predator” reboot made likely isn’t what die-hard fans or the studio (Fox) were looking for. The reboot cost $88 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo, so it’s going to have to do pretty well in the long-run to make that up with a profit. The reviews are not great either (34% on Rotten Tomatoes), so this might be a bit of a stall moment for the Predator franchise. Maybe bring Arnie back for a cameo?

“The Nun” fell to #2 this week, with a 66% drop to $18.2 million. However, it’s already totaled $85.1 million in North America, with nearly $230 million worldwide (off of a small $22 million budget), so this continues to be another major win for the ‘Conjuring’ universe. It’ll likely cross the $100 million mark sometime in the next two weeks.

Anna Kendrick & Blake Lively’s “A Simple Favor” surprised with a strong $16.1 million at #3, motivated by very strong reviews too (82% on Rotten Tomatoes). I saw this movie on Sunday night, and definitely earned the strong reviews — one of the most fun movies I’ve seen all year and keeps you guessing the ENTIRE time. Definitely recommend.

Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey's new film, “White Boy Rick”, disappointed a bit at #4 with only $8.8 million.
